Standard for Connecting Electric Components of Light Electric Vehicles
Workshop in Stuttgart Focused on CANopen Specifications
02/28/2008 (Melanie Wiederkehr)

Industry representatives discussed EnergyBus topics during the Workshop in Stuttgart on February 4-5, 2008. Selected statements demonstrate the importance of such standard and the support of the participants.

The two-day workshop started with a welcome speech by Wolfgang Forderer, Head of Policy Planning of the City of Stuttgart. Mr. Forderer provided an introduction into the mobility situation in Stuttgart. Pedelecs will play an important role in this hilly city to encourage bicycle traffic. The opportunity to test different types of pedelecs was given in the evening when the participants rode up one of the steepest roads of Stuttgart.

After a short overview of the main ideas of EnergyBus and decisions already made, a short presentation was given by Holger Zeltwanger from CAN in Automation on CANopen. In the afternoon, Olga Fischer von CiA presented the current state of the CANopen profile of battery and charger.

On the second day, Hannes Neupert, President of ExtraEnergy, introduced into the Deutsche Post electric cargo cycle application and presented different marketing concepts. Industrial designer Johanna Tiffe gave a speech about public battery rental systems.

There will be several working groups for the further development of EnergyBus. Final decisions will be made by the EnergyBus Members which will be based on the proposals of the working groups. The goal is to define all details and specification of the EnergyBus-system by 2009 (available for Members). This will enable producers to integrate the system into their product development.

Selected Statements from Workshop Participants

After plugging together all components, a pedelec should work without any problems. It is important for system manufacturers to participate in the development of EnergyBus.

We have decided to use a Bus system in our future bikes.

We were frustrated with the different quality standards of our equipment that we are getting from Asia. We have to try to get products of a more consistent quality level. Introducing EnergyBus seems the right way to me to control suppliers and avoid delays in delivery.

I’m convinced after this meeting here: If a company producing e-bikes want to play in the market they must participate and become a Member or whatever, put a active role in the standardization process.

Main Discussion Topics

-Who is the Master, is a flying Master or a defined one necessary or is it a combination?
- How are the NOD IDs being selected. Are they fixed according to the kind of component or are they given by the master?
- How will the components get enough energy in order to communicate?
- Which are the advantages and the disadvantages of a fixed voltage?
- Are there use cases which need Hot-plug?

Dörndorfer, Johannes; Telerob
We will use EB or develop an own bus by the middle of the year.

Steckmann, Kai; SFC
SFC decided to enter the Market of Electric Vehicles. We are looking what to do to meet the needs of Manufactures, Component producer and the user of bicycles to adopt the product to the market.

Schneider, Gerry; Electragil
The reason for me to be here is to look at EB for Sunstar.
For us EB is so important because we are just putting the bikes together. It just have to work and hasn’t be too expensive. I see it’s a very important step for the producer of the unit so I strongly recommend Sunstar to support the EB.

Dr. Kukuk; Heinzmann
We have decided to use a Bus system in the future bikes. The question is whether EB or a proprietary one. I am here to look what is going on, how we can get the most quality out of this, make it useful for us and to share all this values.

Thomas Lange, Digalog
Digalog can be a Member of the technical task force. I think this is our job. Not the Marketing but the technical.

Krapfl, Zach; Pacific Cycle
We have been primary frustrated with varies different quality standards for our equipments that we are getting from Asia right now. We have to try to get more consistent products from either Asia or Argentina or the US. This seems to me to be one step to do so as we can willingly force the factories to consistently produce products that we can test and diagnose issues without having a nightmare of 6 month delay of product development. Generally we support structural testing standards. For us we are going to support EB and EE doing most likely the frameworks. We would love to be there. In certain areas this would create nice options.

Kohlrausch, Philipp; Bosch
I’m here to observe this market. Personally I will try to convince (my company) this would be a interesting field to get into.

Binder, Norbert; IXXAT
Once there is a specification, we will support all the interest people to try to implement it.

Tittel, Daniel
We are interested to develop EB and to prototype it.

Feix, Hans M.; Sunstar
I’m convinced after this meeting here: If a company producing e-bikes want to play in the market they must participate and become a Member or what ever , put a active role in the standardization process.

Engel, Tomi DGS
We are working on future Energy structures and LEV belong to that. We are willing to give our input to Micro-billing and Energy management. But DGS won’t be a paying Member as we have no Money. We are trying to be a partner.

Vincent, Dominic
I see there is no French Company here so I will try to enlarge with French Manufacturers of Charger, Battery and Bicycles.

Zeltwanger, Holger; CiA
If our Members ask to support that is our work, we will do so. If there is no interest we have enough other work to do.

Dr Retzlaff; Mentzer Electronic
We will provide a interface with CAN compatible with EB.
